(Year 3 of GDMA Spring 2009)
I’ve decided to document my wine-bottle making process.
Why?
Basically I want to get into the habit of including the ‘in progress’ aspect of work, to become better at showing process. Hopefully, I’ll get decent at it and my portfolio won’t blow.
Also. I personally would love to see fellow classmates/friends work-processes, the trials of doing what they make, whether it be 2d or 3d and so on and so forth. So this is my challenge to you! Post your stuff!
Okay, all that being said, here we go. An extensive look at the project.
T-Minus one week before project is due:
I present my plans for the bottle to Dale. It is to be called ‘Sucky Ninjas and Technicolor Jumpsuits‘. Dale disapproves of it because it’s not really about my target audience (agreed) and got me thinking about perhaps not the wine/winery so much but maybe about the experiences of the target-market…

At the end of class Jack Johnson comes on my iPod (remember when, a song he wrote for his wife), and some plans are sketched up.
T-Minus >a week
Day 1 (Wednesday): Fabric Shopping with Momma, to a.) learn how to sew and b.) to make a wine-cozy (which I didn’t actually end up using).

Day 2 (Thursday): Big buttons are made and I have a mini freak-out because there are no little buttons left, the big buttons look stupid and take up too much space. Small buttons are to arrive on Monday. + Late night sewing ensues but at least the little cloth snugglies are finished.

Day 3 (Friday): Small buttons arrive early! Hurrah! Buttons are made. Vinyl is cut. (I will include a picture from the place where vinyl was cut, aka the land of endless silkscreens. no seriously there are like a hundred billion silk screens everywhere, those wooden box looking things).

Day 4 (Saturday): Frosting to 3 bottles is done. Mini drama because the frosting was un-evenly applied (which ended up looking beachy and awesome. yay). A very tired and broken down (from his fight) Kyle drops off completed box, which looks AMAZING!!!! Got super stoked on it before work.

Day 5 (Sunday): Superbowl. Yeah Steelers. Alcohol was consumed and labels were designed.
Day 6 (Monday): 2D mock-ups are made and printed. Final bottle is frosted. Box tag and mini info-graph on ‘how to write a message in a bottle’ is made and printed. and Labels were printed. Ran into Kellie+Shauna at Staples on my way home to re-save labels to 8.5×11 (stupid Jessica thinking they’d have special paper in 11×17). Last second decision to save as CMYK instead of RGB (you’d think it would have turned out positively), but caused the print-outs to turn out too green-esque. Thankfully it wasn’t really noticeable on the bottles themselves.

Day 7 (Tuesday): Project is due. Everything is completed and no scrambling was done.

wow! it all looks so amazing Jess, you did a wicked job and should be super proud of it!
